In the summer of 2004, fire swept through the lodgepole pine forests east and north of
Yellowstone lake. Within weeks after the fires burned out, a
profusion of wildflowers burst through the sooty soil. This
photo was taken atop Lake Butte. The far northern reaches of
Yellowstone Lake protrude in the background.
