replica thatch hut greets visitors to present-day De Soto National
Memorial. In May 1539, Hernando de Soto landed ashore with his
Spanish army, intent on capturing Florida. Thus began a four
year, 4,000 mile odyssey that ended in despair as de Soto lost his
fortune and his life.
