A
replica thatch hut greets visitors to present-day De Soto National
Memorial. In May 1539, Hernando de Soto landed ashore with his
Spanish army, intent on capturing Florida. For four years and
4,000 miles, de Soto and his army marched throughout what is now
southeastern America, looking for riches. Finding both allies
and enemies among the native Americans, the expedition discovered
new lands for Spain and endured disease, and de Soto lost his
fortune and his life.
