Andersonville was an infamous prison camp operated by the Confederates, near present-day Americus, Georgia.  Captured Union Soldiers were crammed into the open air barricade with no shelter and little food.  Buffeted by the elements and plagued by disease, thousands succumbed to death.  A National Cemetery (above) is maintained near the prison site, and includes many Union soldiers.
