Born
:  Eastern Ontario, April 15, 1875.  Also known as Bert.

Died: In Montana at the age of 74.

Parents: Thomas and Margaret Gourley, natives of Canada. Nemuel was the third of six children. Thomas was a photographer.

Married: Viola Raymond in Helena on December 8, 1909.  The couple had no children.

OccupationMoving to Montana at the age of 19, Nemuel took a job as a messenger for the Great Northern Express Company.  During his early years he worked as an apprentice and learned the trade of a baker.  Afterwards, he purchased a bakery which was operated in a building where the Grand Hotel formerly stood.  Later, he started a new bakery north of the alley on the site of the the former Buttrey grocery department.  The building burned and was eventually rebuilt. While rebuilding, Nemuel baked his bread in the ovens of the Fort Assinniboine bakery, hauling it back and forth to Havre, using for his headquarters the basement of the old Gussenhoven building.  After the fire in 1904, Nemuel moved his frame building to the lot on the south side of First Street between Second and Third avenues and started the Gourley Bakery and Confectionery building next door.  In 1910 he moved into his new building.  With business booming in 1919 Nemuel relocated to yet another building on the North side of Third Street between Third and Fourth avenues.  In 1925 he sold his stock and equipment to Place and Jacoby, leasing the building to them.  In 1929 both businesses and buildings were sold to Butterkrust Baking Company.  George Loyd was the manager. The new management installed extensive improvements which included new and modern baking machinery, insuring bread made without being touched by hands.  The final change of ownership came in 1934 when the Butterkrust Bakery was taken over by Eddy's Bakery.

Other Accomplishments:  Nemuel was an initial developer of the Havre Music Festival, founded in the 1930's or  1940's.  He was a member of the Presbyterian church, a Mason, a Shriner and a member of eastern Star.  Nemuel was also a dedicated Republican.
